AI Safety Fundamentals

What is AI safety?

New technologies bring new opportunities for progress, but often come with novel risks.

We believe advanced artificial intelligence (AI), particularly artificial general intelligence (AGI), would be one of the most impactful technologies developed this century. However, there are many open problems in present-day machine learning (ML) systems which could be exacerbated as systems’ capabilities become more advanced.

Finding acceptable solutions to these problems ahead of time will require a concerted effort from researchers, policymakers and others in the decades to come. We run courses and provide these resources to help support people who take seriously our responsibility to safely navigate the potential development of AI.

Click to learn more about technical AI safety, and what we mean by the AI alignment problem. We hope to add a similar introduction for safe AI governance and policy considerations soon.

Our courses on AI Safety

We run 12-week, part-time courses to help you learn about AI safety and make professional connections to the field. The courses are virtual and completely free.

During the courses you will learn about current ideas, meet others getting started in the field who you can collaborate with, and talk to experts who can help you navigate opportunities and projects in the field.
